Both the oldest congregation (1798) and oldest standing church building (1860), First United Methodist Church is a gothic church with a steeple that rises 120 feet above the river valley. Local lore suggests the barrel atop the steeple was from the temperance movement in the early 1900s, but this is strictly fiction. The church has a full kitchen and cooking staff.
