Locally Owned Warren County Shops Gear Up For Small Business Saturday
WARREN COUNTY, OHIO – November 16, 2015 – Small shopping is big business in Southwest Ohio according to the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau (WCCVB), which is encouraging visitors to the area to participate in Small Business Saturday on November 28.
An American shopping holiday created by American Express, Small Business Saturday is held annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. First celebrated in 2010, the holiday serves to encourage shoppers to buy locally in order to support their neighbors. 2014 marked the holiday’s most successful year to date, according to American Express, as consumers spent an estimated $14.3 billion at small independent businesses nationwide.
Small retail businesses have long been a driving force of Southwest Ohio’s local economy, and continue to grow in number throughout Warren County. In all, the county is home to more than 140 antique, boutique and specialty shops, offering unique gifts and décor.
“Small, locally owned businesses are vital to our economy here in Warren County, and one of the major reasons we have become such a popular destination,” said Phillip S. Smith, President & CEO of the WCCVB. “Shopping small and encouraging others to do the same not only keeps money in our local economy, but also supports local jobs, and ensures that all of these one-of-a-kind shops stay up and running for both locals and visitors to enjoy.”
Among the county’s locally owned small businesses are:
- The Jam and Jelly Lady in Lebanon, which sells canned preserves that the owner makes in a “Summer Kitchen” in her own backyard. From rhubarb and strawberry jam to peach preserves and apple cider butter, the flavors reflect the seasons.
- The Fabric Shack in Waynesville has been in operation for nearly 30 years. This mom-and-pop shop started out as a flea-market business, and has grown into one of the top retailers of quilting fabric in the industry, supplying quilters all around the world. The spacious store houses thousands of patterns and prints for all occasions.
- The King’s Mills General Store and Christmas Shop near Mason is open April through December annually, showcasing holiday ornaments, nativity scenes, advent calendars, nutcrackers, Santa figurines and more.
Warren County is also home to a variety of locally owned and operated hotels and bed and breakfasts for out-of-town visitors wishing to extend their stay.
